Leadership Journey

Increasing Business Complexity Requires Creativity and Agility

In today’s highly complex and rapidly changing world of work, it often feels like we are driving in the fog trying to go faster and faster. The pace of work is quickening and the complexity of work is deepening. Globalization, automation, regulation, 24/7 mobility, and disruptive economic, social, and political turmoil have dramatically impacted our work and life. Leaders can no longer depend on past patterns of success to operate effectively in this dynamic landscape.

Agility is a response to this increasingly foggy, complex world. Planning is necessary but quickly becomes irrelevant with the changing landscape.  Leaders are constantly needing to pivot and plan again. Navigating a VUCA world (an environment characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity) requires our organizations to be creative and adaptive, which means the people in our organizations, at all levels, must be as well. Agility combines clarity in direction with adaptiveness and creativity in execution.

The Agile Leadership Journey™

Despite the recognition that business agility is needed, becoming more agile isn’t easy. Personal change is hard, process change is harder, and organizational change is harder still. Yet change is a necessary business competency in a complex, uncertain, and rapidly changing environment.

Most agile transformations fall short of expectations because leaders fail to take a key role in the transition. As a result, the organization’s culture creates more friction than function, enabling the desired agility. Because organizations mirror their leadership, agility must start with leadership.

Our Agile Leadership Journey™ leadership development programs educate, inspire, and catalyze leaders to change themselves and their organizations toward more agile ways of working. We build better leaders to improve business performance, health, and resiliency in highly complex, uncertain, and rapidly changing environments.

Agile Leadership

The ability to effectively lead in a VUCA world is necessary at all levels of an organization. This is true regardless of whether you are leading an organization, a team, a project, or influencing in other ways. As a leader develops agility, they increase their creativity to identify better outcomes, stakeholder engagement to co-create them, and situational adaptiveness to achieve them. More agile leaders see more options, engage in more diverse dialogue, and make more informed decisions, resulting in the ability to take more effective actions.

The Agile Leadership Journey™ approach to leadership development is based on the concepts that leaders have the capacity to grow through stages to improve their effectiveness, that leadership can be developed and that everyone, regardless of role or title, can demonstrate more effective leadership.

UNDERSTAND AGILE LEADERSHIP
Agile Leadership Journey's compass with the words leader (at top) and organization (at bottom), beliefs (at left) and behaviors (at right) appearing in the outer circle as the directions of the compass. The inner part of the compass is divided into quarters with the words growth mindset and catalyst habits in the top two quarters and aligned values and value delivery in the bottom quarters.

The Leadership Journey Compass™

All organizations have the potential to benefit from increased agility and adaptability. However, charting a course to get there can be challenging. Most organizations struggle to realize the potential of an agile transformation as a result of too narrow a focus on value delivery, which is only a fraction of what an organization needs to execute well to thrive and grow.

Our Agile Leadership Journey™ programs are built upon our Leadership Journey Compass™ to aid leaders in this navigation, focusing on developing leadership thinking and behavior to shape people and the organizational culture to improve value delivery. This leadership compass provides direction and orientation for leaders to refocus on their learning and practice. This includes developing a growth mindset, building catalyst habits, aligning values, and improving value delivery, which help to improve their leadership effectiveness and organizational resilience.

Organizational Culture

Culture is hard to describe, yet it permeates every group of people and can be seen by everyone who comes into contact with them. Based on the history and beliefs of a people, the espoused values of its leaders, and visible through the norms of everyday life of its people, culture exists in geographies and regions, nation states and religions, sects, and subgroups.

Culture also exists in organizations, both in for-profit corporations and nonprofit missions. The organization’s values shape how the organization is organized and interacts with others, the structures and policies leaders put in place, and the extent to which it can innovate and compete.

As Edgar Schein states, “Leadership and culture are two sides of the same coin.” There is a direct relationship between leadership and organizational culture which surfaces through leaders’ beliefs, assumptions, thinking, decisions, and actions. Thus, Agile Leadership Journey™  leverages this symbiotic relationship – leadership shapes culture and culture shapes leadership. Leaders can develop the capacity to deliberately shape themselves and their organizational culture to improve business effectiveness.
