Agile Leadership Compass

Providing orientation and direction for Agile Leaders

Agile Leaders must first know the landscape of leadership

North and south directions represent the opposing views of the leader and organization. Leaders who do not first develop their self will unlikely be effective at developing others or the organization as a whole.

East and west directions represent the opposing internal and external aspects of the leader and organization. How leaders think impacts how leaders act. What organizations value impacts to how organizations deliver, sustain and grow.

Often the focus of most agile initiatives is toward the Southwest - focused on the organizational delivery. However, without first orienting the leaders and enabling the organization, these early results often don't last.

Compass Orientation

Leadership

Agile Leadership is first and foremost about the leader. Being aware of your current leadership maturity and how your thinking and behaviors impact others is the first step toward improved outcomes.

Agile Leaders must then understand where to go on their journey

Once leaders understand the landscape of Agile Leadership, it helps to know where to go and how to get there. It is one thing to know where true north is, an effective agile leader must orient their position relative to their current state and their own leadership objectives and those of the organization.

The Agile Leadership Compass Orientations provide navigational guidance to leaders to help develop their own thinking and behaviors as well as the guidance required in leading organizational agility.

The top two orientations focus on how the leader thinks and acts. The lower two orientations focus on what the organization values and how it performs. Again, most leaders primarily focus toward the Southeast (Value Delivery) - however, it is the other three orientations that enable it to sustain and grow.
